Let’s Go To Brazil

I’m not exactly sure what’s taken me so long to write a formal post about this but since our OSU showing is this weekend, now is the perfect time to elaborate on this all-consuming opportunity I am so grateful to be apart of. Let’s start from the beginning.

The amazing and awe-inspiring new chair of our department, Susan Hadley, was awarded a large amount of money to complete a project and she decided she wanted to put together a student rep company to tour one of OSU’s newest global gateways—Brazil. Last February the department held auditions and 11 graduate and undergraduate students were chosen as the Brazil Tour Group and we’ve essentially been preparing for this tour ever since!

Getting ready for this tour has been a lot more than two hour rehearsals every Tuesday through Friday since the first week of school in August. It meant opting not to perform in Dance Downtown. It meant taking a Monday night course on Brazilian history and culture. It also meant writing countless grants and scholarships to fund our travel expenses. The first few months of last semester were cluttered with writing research proposals, meeting deadlines and convincing people to fund our individual research projects which is excellent experience to have. That brings me to my next point: my research.

When I wrote my project proposal for Project Playtime, I wanted to create a couple short films before the summer was over to get more experience under my belt. That didn’t happen, unfortunately, but I still wanted to self-direct my own video/film project so I took on the role as the videographer for the Brazil experience. I’ve been permanently attached to my camera and tripod while basically living in the media lab all semester working on the promo video/trailer for us and with great input from Dori Jenks, Jessica Rutherford and my amazingly supportive peers I finished it just in time for this week!

I can’t believe the tour is finally happening! We have all been working SO HARD this year and I am literally bursting at the seams to show my family, friends and peers everything that we’ve been investing in this school year. Tomorrow and Saturday are our informal showings at OSU! Come on out to Sullivant Hall on either day at 7 p.m. to see the show for everyone’s favorite price of FREE.99! It’ll finally feel good to perform our finished works for people instead of bare studio walls.

My research will definitely extend into our actual touring experience, but for now I am just proud of what I’ve done and the fact that the department is also proud of my work speaks volumes.

Lastly, I want to give a quick shoutout to the company. You guys are family to me and I am so excited for this weekend and to travel with you hooligans! Thanks for making this experience that much more awesome.

Stay tuned for more updates!
