Step outside, let’s play

Although a large part of me is elated that this jam-packed semester is finally coming to a close, a part of me is definitely sad that I’m done with this semester’s courses. This semester was one of the first semesters in a while that I absolutely loved every single class I took so I guess the hectic juggling of it all was worth it. I’ve learned an obscene amount of things about myself and the topics that I’ve been studying but I’m here to specifically talk about the magic that was my Intermedia course.

In my last post I talked about the general gist of the course but since the course has come to an end, I can elaborate even more.

One of the most important things I’ve learned from this course is to step outside of the box. Intermedial work isn’t any one thing. Throughout the entirety of the course I experienced how differently projects can turn out based on the same guidelines depending on the minds the ideas sprang from. Once I accepted that intermedia could be anything, I began to fall in love with playing. (Hence the title of the post).

I want to give a quick shoutout to Tim, Sheila, Charlotte, and Anna. Working closely with them all semester was literally so much fun! We created some really cool environments to explore.

For the first time ever in a creative course I felt that the possibilities were literally endless. That’s the fun part about learning something new; there’s no pressure to “get it right” because you’re just trying to figure it out. A majority of our group projects were created by happy accidents. I was fortunate enough to be placed in a lab group with people who were so open to everything that we tried almost every thing we thought of. Some things worked. Some things didn’t. It was the playing that took away all the pressure of creating something people would understand.


This is one of my favorite pictures from this semester and it was actually from a lab session for our first study on digital doubles. On this day in particular, Tim was accidentally pointing the camera at me while I was manipulating a screen with a projection on it. The live feed of myself apparently looked really cool (I couldn’t really see it) so I just played around to create the big projection for our study. After it was recorded and I sat and watched it with Justin Bieber singing “Baby” 800% slower and I was legitimately in awe–mouth open and everything. I’d created something bizarre that I would never think could spring from my mind. I watched so proudly thinking, “man, I did that.”

Throughout the semester I found that I was getting more and more comfortable with stepping outside of the box that I constantly place myself in. Creating without judgement is so liberating, especially when you stop judging yourself. There were many times were our classmates would tell us that our ideas didn’t exactly come across the way that we’d hoped but that was totally okay. We’d only begun to scratch the surface.

I want to thank Norah, Oded, and Jess for being such awesome and patient teachers. I’ve only dipped my toes into the world of intermedia but I’m excited to play in the future.
